On December 6, Saint Nicholas Day is celebrated in Luxembourg.
On this day, public elementary schools have a day off - children celebrate the arrival of St. Nicholas, Kleeschen, as he is affectionately called in the local language.
There are many legends about St. Nicholas, according to one of which he saved three children from a barrel, where an evil butcher hid them. Since then, he has been considered the patron saint of all children.
On this day, St. Nicholas walks around towns and villages with gifts, accompanied by his black servant Houseker. Nikolas gives gifts to the children, and “Houzika” holds rods under his arm to intimidate negligent and disobedient children, but, as a rule, he never uses them!❄️
In anticipation of the arrival of St. Nicholas, the guys sang the traditional Luxembourgish song Léiwe Kleeschen, gudde Kleeschen in Russian ❄️❄️❄️
